Matthew Spalding

Job Title: Business Development Executive

How long have you worked for Let’s Connect?
As it happens I have just celebrated my 10 year work anniversary

For those not familiar with the company, can you describe what it is that you do:
I have the pleasure of meeting and chatting to HR and Reward professionals, who are looking to offer their workforce something special – and luckily for me our Technology Benefit is just that!

What’s your favourite memory / moment at Let’s Connect?
A colleague (who shall remain unnamed) was using our onsite gym, demonstrating the correct way to swing a kettlebell and in doing so ripped his shorts all the way from front to back. He claims to this day that it was my fault and that I owe him a pair of shorts.

What is your favourite piece of tech?
Probably my smart watch. A short while back, I ordered an Apple Watch through our Technology Benefit, having resisted for a few years and now I can’t do without it. It definitely helps keep me motivated to get my 10K steps in every day.

About me

What was your first job?
I worked for an energy supplier in Worcester, following attending college in the city. It was a great stepping stone to where I am today and I still have fond memories of my former colleagues.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I have two young children who take up plenty of my time, but when I’m not doing TikTok dances or playing dinosaurs with them, I love going to Molineux Stadium to watch Wolves which has been a much more enjoyable experience these last couple of years compared to the previous 20!

What was the last TV series you watched?
We’ve just finished watching ‘Squid Game’ which I personally thought was brilliant and now I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the new season of ‘You’ on Netflix.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Courteous, outgoing and cultured (I like to think my right-foot is when I’m playing football!)

Hobbies and interest

Do you have any phobias?
Water, which my friends discovered to their amusement on recent stag-do when white water rafting was the activity! I’m not great with heights either, although my previous team at Let’s Connect bought me a bungee jump experience as a Christmas present which helped conquer that fear!

If you could have one superpower, what would you choose?
I’d probably choose Hulk-like super strength. I’m not too sure what I’d do with my power, but I’d enjoy finally being stronger than our Warehouse Manager, Nick, for once.

Do you have any hidden talents?
I seem to be able to fall asleep absolutely anywhere – that’s a talent, right?

If they were making a film about your life, which actor/actress would you want to play you and why?
Jonah Hill. I find him hilarious in the two ‘Jump Street’ films!

Tell us one thing that is on your bucket list
I’d love to visit all 92 Football League grounds. Having just had a quick count, I’m currently on 22, so still a long way to go.

If you didn’t work for Let’s Connect what would your dream job be?
It’s quite an obvious choice for me. I would have loved to have been a professional footballer, however I realised by the age of ten that it probably wasn’t going to happen sadly, as my skill never matched my enthusiasm.

My colleagues

Who makes you laugh the most?
Richard Lenton, our IT / Product Manager. This may have something to do with a certain pair of ripped shorts.

Who has the least tidy desk?
James Lloyd, in Marketing. The contents of his Monsters Inc. lunch box are usually spread out across his desk.

Who do you get on best with?
This is a very difficult question to answer. I’ve seen so many new faces join and become friends of mine. As I work from home most days, I’ll choose my wife, who has also been working from home alongside me (I know this is a cop out).

Who buys the office treats?
Adam Berry who manages our Client and Customer Services teams. I think he’s keeping the local shop in business with the number of doughnuts he brings in!
