Nintendo Switch Online Service

Nintendo Switch Online Service

Since its release in early 2017, the Nintendo Switch has been a huge success offering gamers the ability to switch seamlessly between handheld, tabletop and TV modes. This freedom of being able to play anywhere, anytime, coupled with some of today’s most popular games such as Mario Kart and Fortnite, has made the Switch a must-have console.

However, the days of challenging your friends online for free look to be numbered as Nintendo prepare to launch their online subscription service. Nintendo recently announced that their paid-for subscription service is expected to arrive sometime in September and although an exact date has not been released, Amazon have already begun taking pre-orders for both three-month and 12-month subscriptions.

So what exactly is the Nintendo Switch Online Service?

Essentially, it’s a paid subscription service allowing you to play games with your friends online, similar to Xbox Live or PlayStation Now. Your subscription will also give you access to an ever-increasing collection of classic NES games. So far, 20 games have been confirmed for launch, including Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda.

Nintendo Switch Online will also be accompanied by a mobile app, available for both iOS and Android, offering voice chat functionalities, as well as other game-specific features. The app is available to download right now, but is currently restricted to use with Splatoon 2 only, opening up to more games in September.

How much will it cost?

Good news for Nintendo Switch owners is that the service will not be hugely expensive. UK based users will pay £3.49 per month, £6.99 for three-months or £17.99 for a full years’ access.

They also offer a Family Membership, which will cost £31.49 per year and allows access for up to eight Nintendo Switch accounts – even across multiple Switch consoles.

You can purchase your online subscription direct through Nintendo or through other retailers, such as Amazon.

Keep your eyes peeled for an official launch date!
