5 key tips to stay fit and healthy

Whether you’re working from home or have a busy day in the office, we know it’s not always easy to find the time or the motivation to exercise, however it’s important to keep yourself fit and healthy. Not only can exercise help keep you in shape, but it can also make you more productive, relieve stress and help you feel happier.

1. Take probiotics or vitamins regularly

Being confined to the same four walls each day may mean that you’re missing out on fresh air, natural sunlight and some of the other benefits you get from going outside.

Probiotics encourage the growth of ‘good bacteria’ that have a positive effect on the body and research has shown that taking a probiotic daily has a plethora of health benefits.

Alone these will not prevent the flu, however they can have a positive influence on your body and can help prevent sickness. You can also eat foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi and cottage cheese.

A multivitamin can help to support a balanced diet and taking plenty of vitamin D and C has been proven to help prevent the flu.

2. Stick to a healthy diet

While there are no magic foods that fight the flu, a healthy diet can help boost immunity and keep you healthy.

Flavonoids are type of substance found in some plants such as tomatoes that is thought to protect against some types of cancer and heart disease. Foods containing flavonoids can help prevent the cold and flu and include blueberries, black tea, and red wine (just the cheeky one mind)!

You should also focus on a balanced diet of whole foods like fruits, veggies, healthy fats, carbs, and protein.

3. Exercise regularly

Taking time out to exercise whether on your work break, before or after work can help boost immunity. Moderate amounts of aerobic exercise can boost your body’s defences against viruses and bacteria.

Going out for a brisk walk is one of the easiest forms of exercise, but obviously find what works for you and importantly, what you enjoy most – cycling, running, swimming, yoga and weight training, to name but a few of the many other options.

4. Get enough sleep

Sleep is great, we all know this and the right amount of sleep has also been shown to help your body fight colds and build immunity to illness.

According to The Sleep Council, an average healthy adult aged 18 to 64 years should aim for between seven to nine hours a night.

5. Stop the stress

It’s easier said than done avoiding stress, but staying calm is important when it comes to avoiding illness.
Help yourself to stay calm through yoga, meditation, exercise or simply making time for the things you love. After a difficult day, getting out for a run or a high intensity home workout might be just want you need to burn off that unwanted tension and stress.
